Resistance to Biological Growth (Mold, Algae, Moss)
Color-coated stone chip tiles offer exceptional inherent resistance to unsightly and potentially damaging biological growth such as mold, mildew, algae (often Gloeocapsa magma causing black streaks), and moss. This resistance is primarily due to the nature of the surface material: the densely packed, ceramic-coated natural stone granules. Stone (basalt/granite) is an inorganic, mineral substrate. Unlike organic materials such as wood shakes, cellulose-based asphalt shingles, or even some synthetic polymers, it does not provide a food source for biological organisms. The ceramic coating creates a hard, non-porous surface that is inhospitable for spores to take root and thrive. Furthermore, the surface chemistry of the granules and coatings does not support the growth processes of these organisms. While dirt accumulation in shaded, damp areas can occur, the underlying tile surface itself does not promote or sustain biological colonization.
